Full Text :

Hello all,

This semester, the World Affairs Program has the amazing opportunity to travel to Edinburgh , Scotland to compete in Harvard   University ’s World Model United Nations Conference from March 27- April 1, 2005 FSUWAP will be taking 12 delegates to this highly competitive MUN conference.

Important considerations for all WAP members prior to trying out:

1.        You must have a passport (and visa if necessary) valid through at least October 2005

2.        You will be missing a week of classes ; we will provide an excuse note from the Dean of the College of Social Sciences that will allow you to make up any work missed, but please consider the time it will take to make up this work as well as the additional time you will spend preparing for the trip.

  1. The travel fee for this trip will be 0.00.   Please remember that you will also have to pay for food/expenses while in Scotland .  The travel fee will be due at the first team meeting ( March 2, 2005 ).

  2. If you are selected for the team, you must travel to Scotland .  While even those not interested in traveling are more than welcome to participate in the tryouts to gain experience, if you are interested in traveling you must signify your intent at the time of tryout by signing a contract stating that you will travel if chosen for the team or else pay a .00 drop fee in addition to the 0.00 delegate fee which you are responsible for upon selection for the team.

Because of the intense nature of this competition, tryouts have been structured to enable officers to select the most competitive team.  As such, we will be judging on:  writing ability, speaking ability, reasoning ability and caucusing ability.  Your ability to represent Florida   State   University , the College of Social Sciences , and the World Affairs Program in a respectable and professional manner at all times on the trip will also be a consideration in team selection.

The procedure for WORLDMUN Tryouts will differ greatly from previous tryout formats.  Please read the following VERY CAREFULLY.

WORLDMUN Tryout Format and Requirements:

1.        A position paper of 350-375 words must be submitted by   Sunday, February 13, 2005 by 5:00 PM .  Papers should be submitted to director@fsuwap.org in the body of the email or in Microsoft Word.  To ensure receipt of your paper, email it in advance and I will let you know that I have received it.  You may also copy the email to the other officers or to deh6239@fsu.edu but please do not use this address in lieu of the director account. Any position paper not received by 5:00 PM or outside the designated word count will render the applicant ineligible for WORLDMUN .

2.        All eligible position papers will be posted on the FSUWAP website (  www.fsuwap.org ) by 9:00 PM on Sunday, February 13, 2005 for delegate review and consideration.

3.        After eligible applicants have reviewed the posted position papers, they must submit a working paper of at least 50 words by Wednesday, February 16, 2005 by 5:00 PM .   Papers should be submitted to director@fsuwap.org in the body of the email or in Microsoft Word.  Working papers must be in the language of a resolution, but need not be in resolution format.  Working papers must consist of statements (operative clauses) that could be directly incorporated into a draft resolution.  Any working paper not recieved by 5:00 PM will render the applicant ineligible for WORLDMUN.

  1. All eligible working papers will be posted to the FSUWAP website (  www.fsuwap.org ) by 12:00 AM ( midnight ) on Thursday, February 17, 2005 for delegate review and consideration.

5.        Committee simulation   (the last phase of tryouts) will be held Friday, February 18, 2005 at 4:00 PM in 004 Bellamy   Building (BEL) .  Dress for tryouts will be Western Business Attire (suits for men, dress clothes for women).  At tryouts, you will be required to show your knowledge of the topic, parliamentary skills, caucusing ability and ability to negotiate.  If a potential delegate does not show up for committee simulation or is not in Western Business attire, they will be rendered ineligible for WORLDMUN.

It may be helpful for potential delegates to print out and bring the position and working papers posted to the website to committee simulation as reference material for writing draft resolutions.

There will be no make-up or alternate tryout for WORLDMUN.
